This article really speaks out to different social groups. The article talks about Community media. Community media is any form of media that is created and controlled by a community, either a geographic community or a community of identity or interest. Community media is separate from commercial media, state run media, or public broadcasting. I think that it is something that is meant to change peoples thoughts or perceptions about different social groups or even minority groups. For instance when it gave the example about "Zoom Black Magic Radio" which was the only black- oriented station in Fresno, CA at the time. This community media station gave people of Fresno knowledge of black culture, from civil rights to the music.
The article mentions self- expression throughout it. I agree that without self- expression, people won't be able to have their thoughts and feelings about things heard by people. It is important for us as the people to get our points across to others in our nation. The reason is so that we can fulfill this vision of democracy. I agree with the statement that some believe media is undemocratic. I believe that not all media is undemocratic, but majority of it is undemocratic. The reason being is that I feel like a small number of elites like the article said is controlling what information is being fed to us. This article was interesting in that it talked about politics within media and social networks.
Hello Beef 31! Excellent response to the article! I think you have touched base on some very interesting and important points. The two that I agreed with were the media controlling what was being fed to the public and how community media is supposed to open people's minds or change them about certain viewpoints. A quote, "Don't hate the media, make the media," (3) reminded that we do not follow through with this motto. People could stop caring about what others think of them and their views and focus on furthering their selves as individuals and politically. And about the second topic, changing people's minds, people are too scared to argue, debate or disagree with one another. A great quote from this article to back that up is, "It is not about having a gripe with the establishment necessarily, but it is about asserting difference – either from other aspects of the media or just in general." Again, nice job!
ReplyDeleteHey Beef31,
ReplyDeleteGreat post, and I agree in the interests of your post in multiple ways. The concept of Community media is new to me, although I have probably been exposed to some its creations, I didnt realize that they were created independent of commercial, state run, or public broadcasting media. I think is great that these individual community media express the ideals, concerns, and topics that are import to the local community rather than at the national level. Although national topics do sometimes directly influence the audience, community media is targeted specifically to the people local in the area. I believe this is closely tied with self-expression. Self-expression is a key part of utilizing the community media outlets. This allows a more true vision democratic media society, because I too am in agreance with you is saying that today's mass media is mostly undemocratic. Rather it is a small number of elites directing media outlets to push out information that seem to capture the attention of the masses instead of focusing on the interest of the people by the people.
