From Computer Power and Human Reason
This article was very interesting. I didn't feel like it was too hard to understand either. There were a lot of things within this article that somewhat amazed me. For instance, the conversation the computer had with the person. It wasn't really a normal conversation either, the computer was acting as a therapist. It was interesting to see that the computer was asking very relevant questions within the interview. Even though the man had to give the computer a script in order for ELIZA to be able to converse, i still find it amazing that it was doing what it did. The biggest part is how long ago this experiment was done. Technology has come so far and is more important then ever now days. I feel that we as humans are becoming more and more dependent upon technology and it might not be a positive. This was another thing that was brought up in the article. Without technology, especially in the medical field, there would be a lot more death and a lot more difficulty preventing it. I still believe that i liked the ELIZA part of this article but it was an overall good article.

Hello Beef31! Nice response to the article, "From Computer Power and Human Reason." I agree with you that this article was interesting to read and not too difficult to comprehend. I also agree with you that humans’ becoming more dependent on technology is not a positive aspect. It's amazing the concept behind the conversation between the computer and person. I am always astonished how people come up with thoughts and inventions that later change the world. I can barely think straight. In the article, when the words "new media" were used, I could not help smiling and laughing thinking about what it means today compared to what it meant back then. I definitely think that ELIZA has had a significant impact on technology and computers to humans today.
ReplyDeleteHey Beef31,
ReplyDeleteI found this article to be fascinating also. The example given of the script between the woman and ELIZA was very interesting. I actually got a kick out of it because it made so much sense. Although it was a pattern, I feel the “therapy” session concluded effectively. I also found it amazing how these programs existed so long ago. Especially because a lot of the conversational programs such as the iPhone’s SIRI are becoming popular now. With technology because an integral part of our society now, I can understand the authors concern. There has to be a limit to how we utilize technology. I have to agree with you though; the ELIZA part of the article was very interesting
