Discourse of Attention
This article was a great article. It is interesting to hear the way TV makes us think differently, well have less of an attention span. I totally agree with that though because it is like hearing a book be read. There is a huge difference between listening to someone read you a book and actually reading a book by yourself. TV allows you to tune in and out when you want to while reading keeps you engaged at all times because without reading it there is no other way of recieving the message it is trying to put forth. I am starting to wonder if it is TV that has made it somewhat hard to focus when reading for the most part. It was interesting to me the part about how ADHD is often paired with the idea of people being stupid or something of it. I always wonder if i have ADHD because whenever i read i always get off on tangents so it takes me a little longer than usual to read something. Overall i really enjoyed this article.

I like your break down of this article Beef31. It;s interesting to me that as soon as television started to gain popularity, it seemed like a lot of people started being diagnosed with adhd. It's almost as if TV has turned out generation into the ADHD generation because it seems so many young people are on medication for adhd. I also liked how you described that when you are reading all your focus is needed because that is the only way to receive the information. However, when watching tv you can close your eyes and still hear it, or mute it and still see it.
ReplyDeleteHello Beef31,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great response to this article! You always do such an excellent job with your posts which makes it easier for others to comprehend the articles and see your viewpoints. I loved this article! My thoughts exactly, written down perfectly. I definitely believe that television is shortening people's attention span. I am so thankful that growing up I was not exposed to television and other sorts of media as much as my other classmates. I am also thankful that I was put into a sport that required a lot of attention, time and effort. I also think that this class helped me get back into reading (even though it is on the computer).
